Annual Report 1998APPENDIX IIDPTAC MEMBERSHIP FROM 1 JANUARY 1999CHAIRJane Wilmot: Jane is the first woman to Chair DPTAC and the first with a sensory impairment - she is deaf. Jane is currently the Vice-Chair of the Royal National Institute for Deaf People and also Chairs the Disability Alliance and Hammersmith and Fulham Action for Disability. She has been a member DPTAC since 1995 sits on the Rail, Airports and Ferries Working Groups chairing several of the groups in the absence of the appointed Chair. MEMBERSJean Ashcroft: Jean has arthritis which leads to a mobility impairment and occasional use of a wheelchair. She has been a member since 1992 and is also Director of Public Policy and Campaigning for Arthritis Care. She chairs the Rail Working Group and also sits on the Taxi and Personal Mobility Working Groups. Peter Barker: Peter is blind and is the Manager of the Joint Mobility Unit of the RNIB/Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. He has been a member since 1995 and sits on the Airports, Ferries and Personal Mobility Working Groups. He is also a member of the Rail Working Group's sub-committee that considers exemption applications from the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations. He has recently contributed to the Department's work on the Walking Strategy. Sir Peter Large: Sir Peter is a wheelchair user. He is a founder member of DPTAC, having been appointed in 1986 and sits on the Airports and Personal Mobility Working Groups. He has a particular interest in personal mobility issues and is a member of a large number of disability organisations and advisory groups, including the Joint Committee on Mobility for the Disabled of which he is a former Chairman and now President. Grahame Lawson: Grahame has been a member since 1995. He is Head of Planning and Transportation for North Lanarkshire Council and is Chairman of the Personal Mobility Working Group. Bert Massie: Bert is a wheelchair user and is the Director of RADAR. He has been a member since 1986. He chairs the Taxi Working Group and sits on the Rail and Airports Working Groups. He also closely involved with the National Disability Council and the Disability Rights Task Force. Jenny Meadows: Jenny is Director of the Community Transport Association. She has been a member since 1995 and sits on the Bus and Coach Working Group. Dorothy Rhodes: Dorothy has a walking impairment and is sometimes a wheelchair user. She has been a member since 1992 and effectively represents older people on the Committee, being the National President of Pensioners' Voice. She sits on the Bus and Coach, Ferries and Personal Mobility Working Group. Tony Kennan: Tony has been a member since 1993. His background is in the bus industry and also works at a national and regional level with the MS Society. He chairs the Bus and Coach Working Group. Valerie Lang: Valerie has cerebral palsy and for many years was on the Committee of SCOPE (formerly the Spastics Society). She has been a member since 1995 and sits on the Airports, Taxi and Personal Mobility Working Groups. Cath Simpson: Cath is visually impaired. She is an advisor to visually impaired people. She has been a member since 1995 and sits on the Personal Mobility Working Group. Jean Dunlop: Jean is a wheelchair user and has been a member since 1997. She formerly Chaired the Strathclyde Forum on Disability. Ed Bassford: Ed is the Group Manager (Passenger Transport) at East Sussex County Council. He is a regular public transport user and is newly appointed. Peter Field: Peter is a wheelchair user and works as a disability consultant. He is also involved with the National Federation of Shopmobility. He has a range of experience in the disability field but also has a strong private sector engineering background. He is a new appointment. Nick Tyler: Nick is the Senior Lecturer in Transport at University College London, where he promotes an innovative approach to research, design and the implementation of transport policies. He is a new appointment. Joe Hennessy: Joe is a wheelchair user. He is Chairman of the Joint Committee on Mobility for Disabled People. He is well known in the disability field and was previously a member of DPTAC from 1985 until 1995. Peter Lee: Peter is the Managing Director of a Bus Company. This is his first appointment but he has been closely involved in disability and transport for a number of years. Janet Kirk: Janet has a mobility impairment. She is a Parish Councillor and works for the MSF Union as disability advisor. She is also involved in the Labour Party's Disability Group. She also has experience on other disability committees, mainly at a local level. She is a new appointment. Rubina Hassanali: Rubina has a visual and a mobility impairment. She works for Westminster City Council and has a great deal of experience of transport and access issues. She is a new appointment. Carol Thomas: Carol has recently taken up the post as Senior Access Consultant for the Joint Mobility Unit of the RNIB/Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Previously she worked for many years for Disability Wales. She is a new appointment. Richard West: Richard is deaf and has a learning disability. He works for CHANGE. He has also worked with the Department on a project - funded partly by London Transport - to develop an information system for London Underground and buses which people with a learning disability can understand and use. He is a new appointment and is the first DPTAC member with a learning disability. Published 1 October 1999
