Going to hospital

If you are able to use public transport but are unable to afford to pay for it, you may be entitled to assistance from The Department of Health hospital travel costs scheme. The scheme is available on the basis of benefits received and includes help for parents taking children to appointments. More details of the hospital travel scheme can be found at: www.dh.gov.uk/en/Managingyourorganisation/Financeandplanning/DH_075759.

If you are required to attend hospital as an outpatient and you are unable to use public transport for a medical reason, medical staff have the responsibility to arrange transport. In fact the only people who can generally authorise hospital or ambulance transport are:

  • a hospital consultancy team,
  • a general medical practice,
  • a midwife, and
  • a dentist (in some circumstances).
