Door to Door: a travel guide for disabled peopleGoing to school/collegeThe provision of transport to school for a disabled child is the responsibility of your Local Education Authority (LEA). Each LEA can must follow government guidelines to make its own school transport policy. However transport requirements will usually form a major part of the educational needs statement that is created for disabled pupils. Your LEA can be located at: www.dfes.gov.uk/localauthorities/index.cfm?action=authority. If you are the parent or guardian of a severely disabled child, you may be entitled to apply for the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) from when the child is 3 years of age. This benefit may be used to provide a vehicle under the Motability scheme to get the child to school.
