News Release (5 November 2002):
Inclusive mobility

New guidance from the Department for Transport makes it easier to get it right first time in enabling disabled people to use streets, car parks, rail and bus stations as easily as anyone else.

"Inclusive Mobility - A Guide to Best Practice on Access to Pedestrian and Transport Infrastructure" has been welcomed by the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC) for offering practical advice and guidance.

In welcoming the best practice guidance, Jane Wilmot OBE, DPTAC Chair said:

"The design of pedestrian environments is the Cinderella of transport policy and practice. It is often overlooked but it is no use having accessible buses or trains if disabled people cannot get to them.

The Department's practical advice in Inclusive Mobility will help local authorities and transport operators implement improvements that have an immediate effect on access for disabled people".

DPTAC commissioned research by MORI which showed that the design of streets and pavements received the worst rating among disabled people. Half of the disabled people questioned stated they would go out more if the conditions for walking were better. Inclusive Mobility shows those responsible how to make conditions for walking better.
