News Release (17 June 2003):
Delivering inclusive environments

New guidance launched today sets out five simple steps which will help deliver inclusive environments, meeting the needs of everyone.

'Inclusive Projects' published today by the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee gives guidance to those commissioning buildings, transport systems and other developments on how to ensure their projects successfully deliver access for everyone, including disabled people.

In welcoming the guidance, DPTAC Chair Jane Wilmot OBE said:

'The Government is committed to ensuring sustainable inclusive communities. It is essential that designing for inclusion begins at the conception of any scheme and is followed through to completion and when in use. 'Inclusive Projects' will help those involved in project development achieve environments that are accessible to all.'

Jon Rouse, Chief Executive of CABE, writing in the foreword said:

'By adopting the best practice set out in these pages we can achieve fully accessible buildings, open spaces and streets that can be a benefit and a source of pride for everyone.'

Notes to editors

1. The Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC) was set up under the Transport Act of 1985 to advise Government on the transport needs of all disabled people. In 2000 its remit was extended to advise Government on improving access to the built environment for disabled people. It has a maximum of 20 members (of whom at least half must be disabled people), representing a wide range of transport interests. Members are appointed by Ministers and are unpaid, apart from the reimbursement of expenses.
