News Release (10 December 2003):
New student competition launched today - towards an inclusive future

A new student competition Future Inclusive has been launched today by DPTAC. The Competition is open to all undergraduates in the UK and has a bursary of £1,000. The objectives are to generate a lifetime's interest and commitment to the principles of inclusive environments amongst tomorrow's professionals. An inclusive environment is one that can be used by everyone regardless of age, gender or disability.

Launching the competition this afternoon Tony McNulty, Transport Minister, said:

"I welcome the introduction of Future Inclusive and recognise it as an important contribution to the promotion of inclusive design among the designers and planners of tomorrow.

"The Government is committed to inclusive and sustainable communities and environments throughout the country. A society which recognises diversity and which addresses the needs of that diverse population will be much richer for it."

Neil Betteridge, DPTAC Chair, said:

"Research has shown that many professionals working in the transport and built environment sectors lack the required skills to deliver these objectives. By engaging with students who are most receptive to new ideas Future Inclusive will begin to build a commitment to providing an inclusive environment."
